The River That Remembers” by P. N. Udochi

This was one of the more quietly beautiful stories I’ve had the pleasure of reviewing lately. Somewhat mournful, but in a way that speaks as much or more of hope as sadness. The story takes us across eras, and the main voice/character is unusual in the sense that it is a river, an enduring geographical entity that sees much come and go. There are some poignant parallels to time being a river itself, but as the title suggests the story is much more about memory and not forgetting the past. There are several women who show selfless bravery, and there are several different eras of human society represented in the story. In the end, though, the one constant is the river, there to remind all who live around it of all the ones who came before them, all of the important things in life that are so easily lost in the noise and confusion. The writing is evenly paced, and flows really well to the extent you kind of just get swept up in it and carried along.
