“Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men? The Shadow knows!”

Orson Welles stars in “The White God,” one of the very earliest of The Shadow on radio episodes (May 1, 1938). In this one, the Shadow volunteers to help find a missing scientist who holds the secret to a new invention and unravel the mystery of “the graveyard of the Pacific,” where fifteen ships have gone missing in the past two years and has our Naval Department quite worried.

On a hunch, the Shadow and his stalwart companion and aide, Margot Lane, fly to a remote island where the Shadow (through his numerous sources) has heard rumors of a “white god.” However, their sea plane crashes in the grip of an unknown force as they near the island. Surviving the crash, they discover a large volcanic crater, must avoid detection by possible native cannibals, and…well, listen now as Margot and the Shadow strive to win free of the island, discover its secret, and rescue a number of previous survivors before they are thrown into the crater as sacrifices to “The White God,” one of the relatively few episodes with a definite science-fictional element, and an exciting, thrilling little adventure it is, as once again the Shadow proves to young and old that “crime does not pay!”
