“Flotsam” by Amanda Downum
Amanda Downum delivers an emotionally deep tale on many levels in "Flotsam." Rebecca Killian, diagnosed with Uterine Cancer, doesn’t have long to live. She returns home to her native Ireland to die. While there, she meets her long lost love—a Siren named Aoife—and is given another chance. But will she choose immortality in the sea, or a short life with her newfound human love, Siobhan?
Despite the overdramatic love triangle, this reader found the story enjoyable. Downum handles the story well, and the choice Rebecca makes is a surprising—and, for me, disappointing—one. Not because of the choice itself, but for her reason behind it. I’m inclined to say female readers may enjoy this tale more than male ones, but who knows? As for me, I could use a group hug right about now….or a cold shower, not sure which.
