"Fairest" by Brian Attebery

"Fairest" is an American Deep South version of the Snow White fairytale (at least as Snow White’s origin goes) from the eyes of a special slave boy named Abel. Brian Attebery delivers a story rich in character depth and a Pre-Civil War world with believable fantasy elements. Everything progresses to a logical conclusion, even the twists. And as for surprises: some were expected, some weren’t, but you learn what you need to learn when you need to learn it. The author melds a classic story with themes of slavery and freedom, and gives an overall entertaining tale. Being Attebery’s first published work of fiction, this reader was left quite impressed.
