“Assault and Battery” by Jason E. Thummel
Reviewed by John Sulyok
The captain of the I.N. Grimhold has been captured by the enemy, magicked away right off the ship. Now it’s up to the crew to rescue him. A small group rows to shore to the base where they believe him to be. Among the rescue party is Chief Gunner Clap. Clap’s skills at aiming and firing canons become crucial to the mission.
“Assault and Battery” reads as straight and true as Clap’s cannon shots: there are no twists or turns. There is also very little characterization, which makes caring about what’s going on very difficult.
