“Lies Of Omission” by C. Dan Castro

“Lies of Omission” by C. Dan Castro is a gripping story that follows young Caleb Snowe, a lonely boy determined to uncover what happened to his missing mother when every adult around him refuses to explain. His curiosity leads him to summon a mysterious boy named Damian, a being who claims he cannot lie and who begins revealing unsettling truths about Caleb’s family. What begins as a child’s search for answers evolves into a tense night filled with danger, intrusion, and the chilling consequences of uncovering what should remain hidden.
Through vivid dialogue and mounting suspense, the story explores the cost of seeking truth, the struggle between faith and despair, and the fragile boundary between innocence and guilt. Caleb’s courage and Damian’s cryptic honesty drive the narrative toward an emotional and powerful conclusion—one that challenges readers to consider whether redemption and forgiveness are ever truly out of reach.
Perfectly timed for the Halloween season, the story’s cruelty is striking—particularly in depicting a protagonist who intentionally harms a puppy to expose the depths of human darkness. It was gratifying to see justice, in my mind’s eye, served by the story’s end. I have never read anything quite like this before, and it left me reflecting on what Damian truly was. Three possible interpretations came to mind, but after revisiting my Bible studies, I was reminded that Uriel was also known as the “Prince of the Sun” shining the light of God’s truth to those who seek it. A stark contrast to how he is summoned within the story. An enjoyable read.
