In “The Willow” by L. G. McCary, the tree mentioned in the title allows those who visit it to lose their sorrows. Different people have various attitudes concerning the willow. Some use it frequently, some avoid it. One woman’s daily visits lead to a dramatic climax.
The many persons who appear in this story reveal the author’s gift for characterization. The theme appears to be that sadness is a necessary part of life, and should not be replaced with artificial happiness. Some readers may find the final scene overly melodramatic.
