“The Gift” by Charlie Kondek follows Detroit Police Officer Tim Miner, a man gifted with prophetic visions, as he grapples with the abduction of a young girl. Torn between his mentor’s encouragement to rely on his faith-based visions and seeking assistance from a medium—a professed Christian—offering her psychic abilities, Miner faces an intense inner conflict. The narrative delves into the tension between Miner’s religious beliefs, which discourage engagement with the occult, and the pressing urgency to locate the missing girl.
The experience leaves Miner profoundly shaken, feeling as though part of his spiritual connection has been severed. Having lived in and around Detroit, as well as several other cities mentioned in the story, for over 30 years, I found myself researching the locations referenced. One local Apostolic church states, “The word citadel means ‘a fortress that sits on the high ground of the city for its protection and defense.’” The church also shares that its founding pastor received a divine vision to establish it, which influenced my perspective as I read. This added depth to my understanding of Miner’s apprehension and left me contemplating how I would feel in his position—wondering if crossing a line of faith could lead to the loss of such a precious gift. The ending made me wish for more details. I pray Miner’s gift hasn’t been lost.
I was completely invested and enjoyed this read.
