The Things You Should Have Been” by Andrea G. Stewart

Reviewed by Laura Gobourn

Diabolical Plots’ latest story really captures the angst and uncertainty of a young person breaking away from childhood and making a life of independence as an adult. In Andrea G Stewart‘s story we witness the sweet and moving moment when Lei says goodbye to his mother before a five year absence. As well as the childish longing on the part of Lei for his mother we also see the mother’s point of view. She declares herself not ready and continues to think of other things her precious boy could do much nearer to home. Their goodbye is all the more emotional when Lei’s job is revealed to be that of a spaceship pilot. Despite being under 1000 words “The Things You Should Have Been” is beautifully written, very evocative and will stay with me for a long time.
