“Homesick” by Debbie Urbanski presents life for those who have escaped a dying planet, traveling through the stars in a self-contained, artificial world where the entire population is tasked with contributing to the survival of the rest. One role is to care for the children and the children have begun to dream of things they have never seen and places they have never been. They seem to be dreaming the memories of the adults and it is disturbing the balance of the community. The adults become more and more infatuated, nay addicted, to the retelling of the visions each child has experienced immediately upon awaking, and it is scaring them. I stopped myself several times while reading, wondering how the human mind would reach out to each other to form bonds seeking the slightest memory of lives lost. Like a place in a dream promising a better future.
