X Minus One aired Frederik Pohl’s “The Tunnel Under the World” on March 14, 1956. It originally appeared in the January 1955 issue of Galaxy. One of Pohl’s most oft-reprinted stories, it deals with the lengths (or depths) to which advertisers might go in order to test their marketing campaigns. This tale, however, takes this theme to an absurd degree and involves an atomic explosion, a chemical plant, the miniaturization of an entire town, and in its own way–Groundhog Day, the movie.
