“What evil lurks in the hearts of men? The Shadow knows!”

“The Ring of Mah La Lay Lee” aired on March 13, 1949, 12 years into The Shadow‘s 17-year run (1937-1954). Since our previous tale of the Shadow dates to last August (“Tomb of Terror”) we thought it high time for another, as it appears the Shadow is one of our most popular entries.

This tale takes the Shadow and Margot Lane out of New York and onto an island sporting an old hotel, where the evil dwarf god Mah La Lay Lee is the focus of attention, for the magic ring used to call him forth to grant wishes for its bearer is used for malevolent purposes, including murder. It is fascinating to note — and rather chilling to hear — the voice of the dwarf god Mah La Lay Lee, for it sounds virtually identical to the voice of Gollum (another small creature with a ring beckoning him) in the recent Lord of the Rings movies. Surely an eerie coincidence?
