“We Must Love As God Loves” by Rajiv Moté

“We Must Love As God Loves” by Rajiv Moté is thought-provoking in the best way. Do read the writing prompt to which the tale is a reply at the end of the tale, as it makes the story even more meaningful.

In this story, the narrator’s life is ruled by fear. He lives in a village on the edge of a forest, with a fence between the village and the imps. Both sides respect the fence in an uneasy truce. The narrator loves his wife and daughter, but it takes till the end of the tale for him to understand the village priest’s message about choosing not to be ruled by fear.

I don’t want to spoil the tension in the tale, so I will just hint that the question “coming or going?” takes time to make sense—it’s well worth the read to find out why.

My favourite quote is when the narrator wonders at his wife’s love for him: “The pastor explained that such things were not earned, like wages, but given, like grace.”
