“Breaching the Distance” by Hannah Onoguwe
Pat, a soon-to-be mother, sits in the hospital’s maternity waiting room in this fantasy novelette. While she is alone, a stranger helps her. He even carries her travel bag when the nurses take Pat to her room.
But when the stranger comes back, Pat senses something isn’t quite right. And it doesn’t help that a nurse wearing an old-time uniform accompanies him. Pat can’t escape before the stranger casts a spell to immobilize her. Then the decaying nurse hands him a scalpel, and things get much worse for Pat.
This character-centric story was an engaging read. However, the speculative elements were light.
